Origins

How a paper house began

Entrance of the Chimanlals showroom in Fort, Mumbai Fort, Mumbai

Chimanlals grew from the handmade-paper department of Chimanlals Paper Co., in the early 1960s, and later became Chimanlals Pvt. Ltd.

The company has helped bring Indian handmade paper into everyday use ever since, turning it into cards, envelopes, letter papers and gifting objects that people keep, not just admire.

Early 1960s. The handmade-paper department begins within Chimanlals Paper Co.

Formal incorporation. Chimanlals Pvt. Ltd. was formally incorporated by the late Mrs. Bharati B. Dalal.

Today. Chimanlals remains a family paper house in Fort, Mumbai.

Design Language

Drawn from Indian art and craft

Textiles, embroidery, architecture, pottery, jewellery and folk art all feed the motifs printed on our paper. Choose a source to see it in a Chimanlals design.

Material

What the paper is made of

Cotton waste is the core ingredient of our handmade paper. Select a material to see the kind of texture it lends across the range.

Close detail of handmade paper texture Cotton Waste

The company profile identifies cotton waste as the core handmade-paper ingredient.

These are materials and textures described across the range. Not every product contains every material, and proportions vary by design.

From pulp to sheet

Texture you can feel

Chimanlals describes additives such as jute fibre, wool fibre, silk, threads, straw particles and tea dust, blended into cotton-waste pulp in varied proportions. Each one changes how a finished sheet looks and feels in the hand.

That texture is part of why a handprinted card or envelope feels different from a machine-made one.

The Craft

Printed by hand, screen by screen

Chimanlals largely uses silk-screen printing, which the company profile describes as a labour-oriented process with a rich, vibrant result.

Because the work is done by hand, small variations are part of the result rather than a flaw.

This might be my favorite shop in Mumbai. The prices are incredible and craftsmanship is stunning. You almost don’t want to use what you buy; it’s too beautiful. I also appreciate the kind and knowledgeable workers who make me happy to return.

My favourite shop for the most beautiful Indian stationery. Sadly the art of writing is dying out. Do support this shop.
